Next-generation console focus-Playstation 3-7th generation console with a cell For power

PlayStation began way back in 1986-when Nintendo experiment with disc reader technology. When the format CD-ROM XA was released, Nintendo began to speak with one of the two companies involved with the standard ... Sony. The two companies struck a lot of contract whereby Sony would develop into a Nintendo branded console that will load both traditional cartridges and the new Sony-developed CD format for gameplay.

Trade, however, decreased in a shocking fashion by 1991 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) when the background re-negotiations of Nintendo cancelled the contract between you and Sony and struck a new deal with Philips.
This sent waves through the Japanese economy, as this type of backstabbing had never before been done-it as very un-Japanese. However, had done deed, and Sony was left in the cold. They took their technology which they had called "PlayStation", and went ahead with the development of their own games for the new console.

The official launch of the PlayStation was Dec. 3, 1994, and in North America on Sept 9, 1995. The PlayStation had actually released one year earlier in Japan and had been the subject of a lawsuit between Sony and Nintendo Nintendo tried to block the sale and production maintain full ownership of the technology. Nintendo lost the lawsuit.

Sony had an innovative advertising campaign that helped fuel anticipation for the massive PlayStation move to an ignorant public of Sony as a gaming company. It worked and helped to push the sales of the PlayStation console for more than 100 million units by the end of the production run in March 2006.

The PlayStation 2 was next with development will be announced in March 1999, console 6th generation was unleashed to a waiting world in 2000, and soon Competition everything else to date, approximately 120 million Ps2 consoles have been sold.

PS2 had a unique feature of the protection plate, the ability to fully play PSone or original Playstation Games due to the addition of PSone chipset in the PS2 case, so it does not run a PlayStation emulation, ran an actual PlayStation itself.

PS2 went up against the newly released Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube, due to the marketing campaigns and efficient game development, PS2 won the duel and Sony emerged as the industry leader-a title it would hold until the release of the Xbox 360.

With the release of the Xbox 360 and the massive delays in the release PS3, Sony has slipped-they still hold the title of leading on the market, but the overdue daily as both Microsoft and Nintendo win on Sony's advantage.

PlayStation 3 announced after many months of speculation on the E3 Conference on May 16, 2005. The PS3 has a tremendous number of technological advances and a lot to live up to expectations with regard to.

The cell Processor-this is the heart of the PlayStation 3 and in many ways a very new generation and direction for Sony to go. The cell was developed by IBM with Toshiba and Sony provides financing (approaching $ 400 million) and technical requirements. The cell is an entirely new direction for computer processors, because it is a nine-core processor, running as a single fully integrated system within itself. with one core is primarily and distribute the load between the other 8 cores.
The cell's full name is Cell Broadband Engine Architecture and combines a base on with 9 parallel processor cores PowerPC placed. All are designed to run as a single unit with dispersed over so tools main kernel may send information to all other cores for processing and then hand the results back to the system bus speeds between 3-12 times, of a similar non-Cell processor, such as an Itanium or Opteron.
The cell has been tapped to be the main processor in IBM'S new supercomputer, codenamed Roadrunner, which is expected to exceed one petaflop or 1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 floating point operations per second.

Blu-Ray DVD player-A new technology DVD player that can read 50 GB CD style drives. This is one of two competing DVD technologies, the other is HD-DVD. PlayStation 3 is the first Console to include Blu-Ray DVD functionality in the actual console dvd playback.

An upgradeable hard disk drive-The PS3 will ship with a 20 GB or 60 GB hard disk installed, and from what has been reported that the device can be upgraded to larger sizes as they become available

HDMI port-A High-Definition Media Interface port is standard with PS3 and makes it possible to be connected to the new format television sets to allow playback of video and audio on much higher quality than standard composite video or coaxial signal input. HDMI is all digital, makes a very clean and sharp multichannel signal.

Bluetooth controllers-all PS3 Bluetooth controllers shipped is designed to be fully cordless. There is a USB port for recharging the internal battery and Bluetooth with up to 7 controllers can be used with one game.

WiFi access-The PS3 has WiFi access and will potential for 802.11 wireless networks and wireless controllers to be used with the console.

Memory card readers-The PS3 will have a flash memory card reader compatible with Memory Stick, SD/MMC and CompactFlash flash memory.

Software base-one of the innovative development is the inclusion of Open Source development suite runs on Linux, which seems to be the underlying OS for the PlayStation 3. Not only is this average independent developers can write code for the PlayStation 3, but it means anyone can change any of your Playstation US to perform tasks; such as the Folding@home project from Stanford University, which will be available as a download to run when the PS3 is idle to take advantage of the processing power of the cell.

A rumor that has not been substantiated is Link cable. It has been said that the PS3 will have an accessory called a link cable, which will be similar to a SCSI cable in that several PS3 can be linked in the series. If this is correct, it would enable a user to purchase more PlayStation 3 's and use them as a massively parallel computer for games or software development, such as 3D rendering, or large scale mathematical calculations. If correct, it would be very cool and would jeopardise the ability of a supercomputer in the homes of millions of players.

PlayStation 3 appears to be a huge success, if Sony can bring the bear before Christmas season. A further delay could mean the end of Sony as a major player in the game industry due to the dominance of the Xbox and Nintendo Wii. Let us hope Sony can deliver on the quality assurance or Playstation 3 before Christmas 2006-it would be a sight to behold.
