Sony PlayStation first appeared in Japan in December 1994 and is still to this day considered to be one of the best selling consoles of all times. The revolutionary console brought the gaming age to a whole, new different level. 128 bit graphics made PlayStation the new kid on the block and no one could say a thing about it. Also the design of the joystick has become iconic, all PlayStation consoles having the same model of joystick. New game play, prolonged game time and a vibrating joystick were the characteristics that made the PlayStation the ultimate console in existence.

Sony PlayStation 2 first showed its face in July 2000 and was already competing with the Xbox Arcade and the Nintendo DS. This console brought graphical game play to new heights and would reach loading speed that were not seen until then. Later on, Sony released a model for PlayStation 2 that was a slim edition, thus making the console look sleek and cool. The emphasis for the PS2 stayed on PlayStation memory cards, that gave the gamer the possibility of saving the game at any time. In this manner your game progress was remembered and you could shut down the console without fear of losing the saves.

The last PlayStation model to see the gaming market in November 2006 is the PS3 that came with a Blu-Ray DVD player, a huge hard disk drive and a six axis joystick for advanced directional movement. In addition, the PlayStation 3 will be able to run all games built for the PlayStation 2.

The PlayStation 3 has another trick up its sleeve - what is being described as user created content. That is, the PlayStation 3 promises to bring some gamers out of their passivity, and empower them to add new features to the coming console. This should appeal to PC Gamers, who are used to the joys of mudding, and creating new levels and environments for games. Sony hopes that they will transfer their talents and enthusiasm to the PlayStation 3. Microsoft typically takes a much less enthusiastic view of user-created content, and the Xbox has very limited capacity in that regard- at least in our many of our reviews.

The Xbox and the PlayStation 3 both have online services, but these are quite different in style. With the Xbox, everything is tied closely into the Microsoft empire through the medium of Xbox Live. Sony has taken a more hands-off approach, and it seems there will be the option for gamers to choose one of several online services. It will be possible to play tournaments online through the PlayStation 3.

Who will win this battle? In the short term, the PlayStation 3 will likely win the Christmas sales battle - provided Sony can ship enough units to keep up with demand. But that is simply because they are the new kid on the block. In the longer term, expect sales of the two consoles to be fairly similar - and impressively high in both cases, perhaps between 20 million and 30 million each over the next few years. But once the platform is established, the PlayStation 3 accessory market is sure to take off. Without doubt we will see driving wheels, musical instruments for games like Guitar Hero, and quirky new toys that we can barely even predict.

One disappointment is the lack of support for legacy devices. The PlayStation 3 is not guaranteed to work with hardware additions for its precursor the PlayStation 2. That means a lot of us will be stuck with a cupboard full of accessories that we cannot use with the PlayStation 3. We can hope that third-party developers will come up with some way of unofficially linking the old and the new - but do not count on it.
