The PlayStation Experience

A few months ago a friend entered my apartment to announce that he has decided to perform a very important investment for our future in entertainment. I remained calmly at my sit waiting for him to continue and explain how lucky he was as he managed to find an incredible deal over the internet for the newest version of PlayStation 2. Frankly, I could not believe my ears. I have never played PlayStation in the past and the last video game I have played with my friends when I was still a kid, was an old version of Atari. I could not grasp how someone over twenty-five would pay any amount to become another of those inert players stack in front of their TV screens for hours or even days. But the experience I had when PlayStation 2 entered the premises of my house was not exactly as the one I originally imagined. PlayStation has proven to be an extremely fun and instructive gaming experience. After the first couple of weeks I realized that when someone knows how to keep a balanced life it is possible to spend time exploring this unique gaming experience without the feeling of guilt.

Produced by Sony Computer Entertainment, PlayStation 2 is the successor of the original PlayStation console that has been a tremendous worldwide success since its original introduction. By March 2005, the sales margin of PlayStation surpassed the 100.49 million units, becoming the first home console to ever reach the threshold of 100 million sold games. Dated back to 1986, Nintendo was the first to attempt to work with disk technology, but after encountering a number of problems Nintendo decided to approach Sony in order for the second to come up with a solution. Soon Sony recognizing the emerging video-gaming market planned to initiate production of its own console, leading Nintendo's management team to cancel all deals and form an alliance with Philips; this time securing control over its licenses on the Philips developed machines. By the end of 1992, Sony and Nintendo reconciled their major differences and Sony launched the first version of PlayStation in 1994 in Japan. By September 1995, PlayStation was introduced to the USA, European and Asian markets and its initial success was a prelude of its future sales breakthrough challenge.

The extreme popularity of the PlayStation console introduced the term "PlayStation Generation" and titles like Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, and Silent Hill, have become the favorite pastime games of millions of users worldwide. Having enjoyed over eleven years of continuous videogame production, Sony has announced that the next PlayStation generation, known as PlayStation 3, or PS3, will be launched in November 2006 and will also be a backward compatible device; meaning that it with be able to play all the games that have already been released for the other PlayStation versions.

Although the genius creators of the PlayStation consoles argue that the new version of this popular videogame will advance the user's experience, I doubt that it will actually manage to have the same success in the desired time frame. A vast variety of other videogame competitors, including the powerful Nintendo, have launched a number of games for their consoles, which have increased users' expectations and have made them extremely conscious regarding their next videogame choice. But, I am sure that my friend and I will continue playing the PlayStation games of our choice, like NBA 2K6 or Grand Theft Auto, as PlayStation 3 will be outside our budget for at least a while.

PlayStation 3 - What Is So Special About It?

When you're talking about gaming consoles, the popular PlayStation franchise is probably the first thing that comes to mind. PlayStation 3 is the latest offering from this brand it is all the it promises to be. You can play all your favourite PlayStation games, including the ones compatible with earlier versions of the gaming console on this particular baby.

Features

So what's so special about PlayStation 3? Well, for starters, it really is a great looking console. It is sleek, sexy and attractive looking. Plus, it is backed by the best technology in the gaming world which is saying something. Imagery never got better because PlayStation 3 comes with a powerful graphics card and comes with an equally powerful 3.2 GHz CPU, not to mention a 512 MB RAM.

Few gaming consoles can rival PlayStation. XBox 360 and the Nintendo Wii come close, but, not close enough, if you ask me my personal opinion. Being an avid gamer, I would always recommend PlayStation simply because it lives up to all the expectations one harbours for it.

Another unique feature of the PlayStation 3 gaming console is the Blu-ray drive. So what exactly is the reason behind its inclusion? This has been included in the parts because a Blu-ray drive can handle data at five times the speed that ordinary DVD's can. This is a plus for both game developers as well as gamers. Game developers gain a whole lot of leverage and gamers have the benefit of playing with more realistic characters and vivid graphics.

Games - The Future Is Here

In fact, some say that the games on PlayStation 3 will be so close to real life that gamers will not feel like an outsider, but like a character within the game itself. Another great thing about PlayStation 3 is the game controls. The USP of these game controllers is that they are Bluetooth capable so as to enable you to enjoy your favourite games like Grand Theft Auto and Star Wars The Force Unleashed, on a wireless basis.

PlayStation 3 will also have a backward compatibility feature which, as I mentioned before, means that you can play all the games you bought for previous editions of PlayStation on your newest gaming console. In fact, playing these games on PlayStation 3 will actually enhance them.

PlayStation 3 can also double as a DVD player and an Audio CD player as well. This is because the PlayStation discs aren't the only discs that the gaming console is enabled to play. As you can see, PlayStation 3 is much, much more than just a gaming console. In fact, it can be a huge investment and the smiles on your children's' faces will totally make it worthwhile.

Intrapreneurship Case Study of the Sony Corporation's PlayStation by Intrapreneur Ken Kutaragi

Th story of the Intrapreneurial (corporate entrepreneurial) corporate struggles, determination and the ultimate creation of the the very successful Sony PlayStation by persistent and driven intrapreneur Ken Kutaragi, who's international Intrapreneurial Success story has now become one of the most celebrated in business history.

Intrapreneurship has been successfully utilized by corporations, partnerships, and non-profit firms in the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The underlying concept and idea of Intrapreneurship or Corporate Entrepreneurship had been present in corporations in the United States, Japan, and all around the world, for many decades, even before the term was used in the mid 1980's in the mainstream media.

Howard Edward Haller's University Master's Thesis was published back in 1982. Haller's Thesis was the first academic case study of Intrapreneurship or corporate entrepreneurship. The intrapreneurial success of PR1ME Leasing helped the small growing OTC listed parent corporation (PR1ME Computer) to grow rapidly with strong sales and profits. PR1ME Computer Inc. was OTC listed and becoming NYSE listed n 4 years after launching the very successful Intrapreneurship adventure, PR1ME Leasing.

The terms and basic concepts of "intrapreneur" or "Intrapreneurship" have existed and been effectively utilized in corporations for decades before the popular media put Intrapreneurship in mainstream media. On February 4, 1985 TIME Magazine's article, "Here come the Intrapreneurs" discussed the Intrapreneurial spirit including the creation of Apple, and Saturn within General Motors, as well as Intrapreneurship ventures at AT&T, Data General, DuPont, and Texas Instruments.

Steve Jobs, Apple's Chairman then and now, used the word "intrapreneurship" in a Newsweek magazine article, September 30, 1985, in which Chairman Job's shared: "The Macintosh team was what is commonly known as intrapreneurship-only a few years before the term was coined - a group of people going in essence back to the garage, but in a large company."

Now for the history of successful product creation and international marketing launch of Sony intrapreneurial creation, by intrapreneur Ken Kutaragi, of their very success intrapreneur success with PlayStation.

Ken Kutaragi, who was educated as an electrical engineer, joined Sony Corporation in Japan in 1975, at the age of 25. Ken Kutaragi was working in the sound labs at Sony Corporation when he bought his young daughter a Nintendo game console. Ken observed his daughter playing with the new Nintendo game but he was displeased with the quality of the sound of the Nintendo game. Because of his training and experience in electronics Ken concluded that a digital chip, dedicated solely to sound, would significantly improve the quality of the Nintendo gaming system.

Because the Sony Corporation was not involved in computer games, Ken Kutaragi negotiated to keep his job at Sony, while working as an outside consultant (entrepreneur) for Nintendo on their computer gaming devices. Ken developed the "SPC7000" for the next generation of Nintendo games/machines.

After Ken's success as a consultant to Nintendo the senior executives at Sony Corporation threatened to fire him after they discovered his sideline project with Nintendo. Fortunately for Ken, he had the strong support of Norio Ohga, the Chief Executive Officer of Sony Corporation. Chairman Ohga personally recognized the value of Ken's creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovation, so he encouraged Kutaragi's efforts.

Then with the Sony Corporation CEO's support (and begrudgingly the rest of Sony's senior management's blessing) Kutaragi continued to work as a part-time consultant to Nintendo. Ken successfully developed a CD-ROM-based system for Nintendo.

Then in a life changing twist of fate Nintendo elected not to go forward with the CD-ROM system. Ken Kutaragi saw the market and business opportunity of computer gaming systems for Sony. With his Intrapreneurial spirit, Ken pressed hard to convince the Sony Corporation to enter the electronic gaming business. While most of Sony's senior management did not consider Ken's computer gaming device more than a toy and not worthwhile for Sony, Chairman Ohga took a major chance and backed Kutaragi's plan.

Ken was persistent and he went on to lead the effort to help Sony develop its own gaming system, which became the blockbuster product success "PlayStation". Ken Kutaragi has been often been referred to as "The Father of the PlayStation," was well as all related Sony products, including Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation Portable, and the current Sony PlayStation 3.

Ken Kutaragi has the heart and sole of an Intrapreneur or Corporate Entrepreneur. He fought against corporate "nea sayers" within Sony's management ranks and Ken literally laid his job on the line at Sony to press for the creation of the computer gaming product within Sony. Ken is created with saying, "I wanted to prove that even regular company employees said no, [and] especially regular company employees could build a venture of this scale with superb technology, superb concepts, and superb colleagues."

Sony's "System G" 3-D technology, aka Sony PlayStation, was released in 1994. It immediately outsold Nintendo's Super NES to quickly become the world's top home-gaming platform. Ken's group within Sony did not rest on its significant laurels, Kutaragi and Sony took another major financial gamble on PlayStation 2. Sony backed Ken's corporate entrepreneurial (Intrapreneurial) venture by investing $2.5 billion into the PlayStation start-up, and has gone on to build over 70% of the home-video-game-console international market share.

Sony's PlayStation product line has become the leading video-game platform. The financial payback to Sony has been astronomical. At of the end 1997, Sony's PlayStation annual sales had grown to $7 Billion, in only first four years of the PlayStation product line existence. Ken's Intrapreneurial (or corporate entrepreneurial) success has been called one of the greatest new business creations and launches in business history. Since the 1994 PlayStation's launch, this new Sony product line outperformed both the Sega Enterprises and Nintendo gaming machines.

The Sony PlayStation has taken the clear market share of game consoles, with PlayStation sales of more than 70 million units in the late 1990's. At that time, one in four United States households owned a Sony PlayStation product. The financial success of the Sony PlayStation was so impressive that by 1998, the PlayStation was providing 40 percent of Sony Corporation's operating profits. The strong profits from the Sony PlayStation line still accounts for about one quarter of the overall Sony Corporation's profits.

Kutaragi was soon rewarded for his significant success as an intrapreneur within Sony. Ken was promoted to be the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI), the video game division of Sony Corporation. As Chairman and CEO, Kutaragi built Sony Computer Entertainment group into a major profit center for the Sony Corporation.

In late 1996, Ken was replaced as President of Sony Computer Entertainment and was promoted to Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment. That was only a temporary situation as Ken retired from that position in 1997 and became the honorary Chairman of SCEI.

PlayStation 3 - Is it the Best Blu-ray Player?

There is no denying the fact that while the PlayStation 3 has not performed the best when compared to other gaming consoles, it has consistently ranked high on many best of Blu-ray Player lists. A recent poll conducted by Nielson rating system showed 65% of the people who purchased a PlayStation 3 did so because they wanted a Blu-ray Player. Clearly, many people still view it as a good Blu-ray option. But why would anyone still consider it the best Blu-ray Player on the market. By today's standards it is a rather old piece of equipment, having first been released a few years ago. Here are some reasons why many still perceive the PlayStation 3 to be the best Blu-ray Player and will be for some time to come.

It's Not Just a Blu-ray Player

Sony has made the PlayStation 3 into a multi-purpose entertainment system. It is a gaming console, upscaling DVD player, Blu-ray Player and has many other multimedia capabilities. Obviously, the fact that it is a gaming console is the big difference when compared with other players. The PlayStation 3 can play video games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Uncharted 2 and Little Big Planet. And with the release of a firmware upgrade, it will be capable of 3D Video Gaming. This is a nice extra feature for those just looking to buy a Blu-ray Player.

Many predict the future of home Entertainment will not be Blu-ray but streaming digital media. If this is the case, Sony has prepare the PlayStation 3 to handle digital streaming and distribution. The PlayStation 3 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certified. Meaning you can connect the PlayStation 3 to your Home Network, via the Ethernet Port or built-in Wi-Fi, and stream data from your computer or mobile device to the PlayStation 3. With it's PlayStation Network you can download High Definition videos and TV shows. And Sony recently added online streaming media services in it's deal with Netflix. The simple fact is, no other player can provide the consumer with such a high return value for their investment.

Blu-ray Quality

A few years ago, the PlayStation 3 was really the only game in town when one considered to purchase a Blu-ray Player. This is no longer true. Today there are many stand-alone players that perform extremely well, producing great video and audio quality. However, the PlayStation 3 still holds up rather well when compared to the new Blu-ray models. It still has very fast operational and disc loading speeds. With 1080p playback via HDMI, it produces excellent image quality on both Blu-rays and DVDs. Audio quality is equally impressive. The PS3 supports internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. With the new PS3 Slim you can bitstream out Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to your A/V receiver to decode over HDMI. Also, with the new PS3 Slim you get 55% less power consumption when playing Blu-rays. A feature that should appeal to many consumers.

Sony's Investment

In the High Definition format wars between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, Sony sided with Blu-ray and helped create and develop the HD format. Needless to say, Sony has a lot invested in Blu-ray's success. Adding Blu-ray to the PlayStation 3 was an attempt to secure this success. It provided a great feature other gaming console did not have. To compete with the other gaming console Sony has to keep it's Blu-ray Player relevant. The only way to do this is to continue to upgrade the Blu-ray Player on the PlayStation 3.

PlayStation 3 is Future Proof

The PlayStation 3 is a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray Player. So as Blu-ray technology continues to develop, PlayStation 3 owners are able to download firmware to update the players features and functions. For example, many experts predict 3D viewing will be the next big thing in the home entertainment market. To view 3D movies a 3D Blu-ray Player is required. Those who own a PlayStation 3 will not have to invest in purchasing new equipment. Sony will release a firmware upgrade making their system capable of playing 3D Blu-ray Discs. The benefits of this are limitless, as there will certainly be other upgrades to Blu-ray technology in the future. The PlayStation 3 is able to accomplish this due to its extremely powerful internal processor, large hard drive and peripheral support.

THE PROS:
- PS3 Slim is 32% reduction is size
- PS3 Slim is more energy efficient
- Built-in Wi-Fi
- Excellent HD Images and Audio

THE CONS:
- No Backwards support for PS2
- Remote Control is sold separately
- No IR Port

The Final Word
With so many advances in stand-alone Blu-rays over the last couple of years, it is debatable to still consider the PlayStation 3 the best. But with a price tag of $299.99, it definitely remains one of the best choices when it comes to purchasing a Blu-ray Player.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3 And Nintendo Wii Battle For Hearts, Minds And Sales

With the 2007 holiday season breathing down their necks the big three producers of video game consoles are gearing up for a battle. They are fighting for the hearts and minds of those who play video games, and the winner will be determined by annual sales numbers of their video game consoles. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are doing battle for dominance of the video game industry with their Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii products, and the competition has never been fiercer than it is today.

At the end of August, 2007 it was Nintendo Wii that people were buying the most when they chose a video game console. 404 thousand units were purchased compared to 272 thousand Xbox 360 units and 131 thousand Playstation 3 units. Wii has been selling more than the other two combined each month for the past 10 months according to the NDP Group, the top company for providing information about the sales and trends of industries worldwide.

But Sony and Microsoft have plans that are being unveiled as I speak. They realize that they must really be on their game this year if they are expecting to do well against Nintendo Wii during the holiday season. Sony is expected to release a less expensive version of Playstation 3 and Microsoft has recently released a colorful Halo 3 version of Xbox 360 at a reduced price.

Sales of the Playstation 3 video game consoles have been modest at best since its release. This is due to a number of factors including an expensive initial sales price of 500 to 600 dollars per unit, and a lack of any video games that have achieved cultural phenomenon status like Halo 3 did with Xbox 360. Nintendo Wii has been outselling both of them mainly because of its affordable price of 250 dollars, and the technically advanced Wii remote with the motion sensor feature.

The Playstation 3 console did pretty well last year during the holiday season with 491 thousand video game consoles sold in December, 2006, according to the NDP Group statistics. About 1.4 million Playstation 2 consoles were also sold during that same month, which shows how popular its predecessor was prior to its release. Sales of both Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 began to decline soon after that though, with only 82 thousand Playstation 3 units sold during April of 2007 and only 194 thousand Playstation 2 units sold. However, the number of sales has increased in recent months with 139 thousand Playstation 3 consoles sold in July of 2007 and 131 thousand sold in August, and 279 thousand and 202 thousand for Playstation 2 during those months.

Sony is expected to introduce a 399 dollar 40GB Playstation 3 video game console around November 16 according to insiders of the video game industry. This move by Sony, which is in response to the lower priced version of Xbox 360 that was recently released by Microsoft will be just in time for the holiday season.

There has been much speculation lately about whether or not Sony will be releasing their lower priced Playstation 3, but real evidence was recently provided for this theory when they filed for a system model number with the FCC.

Sony is hoping to get back in the race against Microsoft and their Xbox 360 video game console which recently released a Halo 3 version modeled after their popular video game of the same name. Nintendo Wii is still out in front of these two products and running strong as we head into the 2007 holiday season.

Nintendo Wii has been far ahead in sales over Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 since its release last year at this time. In December of 2006 there were 604 thousand of these video game consoles purchased. 436 thousand were then purchased in January, 2007. Sales are still going strong lately with 425 thousand sold in July and 404 thousand in August.

One of the reasons that Nintendo Wii is selling a lot more video game consoles than Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is because it is very popular in countries other than the United States such as Japan. Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 sales are not very good in Japan. Nintendo Wii is much cheaper, and the price difference can be a very important factor for the average hard working citizen.

As the 2007 holiday season approaches there is a battle brewing over who will rule the video game industry. While Nintendo Wii has been victorious since its release almost a year ago selling more than the other two competitors combined every month, it is about to encounter a revitalized competition.

Microsoft and Sony have regrouped and they are both back in the fight with new versions of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. With no new product to offer, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo Wii will be able to stay on top of sales for video game consoles this holiday season. Microsoft and Sony are going into the season with newer, cheaper and revitalized versions of their video game consoles. Most importantly, they are both companies that have been known to achieve and even surpass the business goals that they set out to accomplish, and they should never be underestimated.

The Free PlayStation Move - Technical Details

The PlayStation Move is, despite only recently being released, is already available for free from many websites and stores either as the bare unit of as a bundle package.

About the PlayStation Move

The PlayStation Move is a motion-sensing game controller system developed by Sony Computer Entertainment for use with the PlayStation 3 games console. Designed to compete with the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox Kinect (formally Project Natal), the PS3 Move is a cable free handheld controller using internal motion sensors in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera to track the players position in the room. In addition to the main motion controller, a supplementary navigation controller as well as a charging station is also available.

Despite being new technology, the Move is now available for free either on its own or with console bundle deals.

PlayStation Move Hardware Details

The Move system uses the existing PS3 Bluetooth 2.0 wireless radio communication used by the traditional Sixaxis and DualShock 3 wireless controllers. Both the standard PlayStation Move controller as well as the PlayStation Move navigation controller use internal lithium-ion batteries that are charged through a USB Mini-B port built into the controller. The PS3 console and software are able to support up to four Move controllers at once, with an equal mix of motion and navigation controllers being permissible.

PlayStation Move Motion Controller

The primary component of PlayStation Move, the PlayStation Move motion controller is a wand controller which allows the user to interact with the PlayStation 3 through motion and position in front of the PlayStation Eye webcam. The orb or sphere at the head of the controller contains LED's that allow it to glow in a full range of colors. These colors allow the controller to be seen and tracked by the webcam. The sphere can also be used by the console to determine the distance the controller is from the webcam thus allowing the PS3 to recognise a full range of 3D movements.

A three-axis linear accelerometer and a three-axis angular rate sensor built into the motion controller allow the system to track rotational movements as well as overall motion. A magnetometer is also built into the device and is used to calibrate the controller's orientation with the Earth's magnetic field so as to act as a check against the accuracy of the onboard sensors.

When the motion controller looses line of sight contact with the webcam (such as when it is blocked by other people in the room), the internal sensors can briefly take over and relay information to the console so the location of the controller can still be determined by the software.

The physical buttons on the Move motion controller consist of a large ovoid primary button,a PS button, the standard PlayStation buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, and Square), a Select and Start button (on the left and right hand sides respectively), whilst an analogue trigger is located on the underside of the unit. Other features and connectors include the USB port, an extension port and a wrist strap attachment point.

Feedback provided by the motion controller comes in the form of vibration, similar to that in the standard DualShock controllers, whilst the light sphere can be used for visual feedback wih hthe color changing to suit in game scenarios.

All processing work for the PlayStation Move is performed using the PS3's existing Cell processor. Whilst the activity of dealing with the Move software will take up some of the consoles resources, there is still likely to be plenty of capacity left over to run the latest games.

PlayStation Move Navigation Controller

The navigation controller (originally called the PlayStation Move sub-controller) is a one-handed controller designed to be used in conjunction with the motion controller in certain games, in a similar manner to the Wii Nunchuk. Usually for use with games where both hands are required for control, the PS3 navigation control replicates the left side of a standard PlayStation controller and contains a left analog stick (with L3 button), a D-pad, the L1 and L2 triggers, the Cross and Circle buttons, as well as the PS button. In games that require the additional controller, a standard Sixaxis or DualShock 3 can be used instead of the navigation controller, although ease of use may be compromised due to the bulk of the standard unit.
